C++ - RS232 Serial Communications Developer (Downtown Toronto and Mississauga)

Role: Smart Logic Monitor Programming Resource

Scope: Client requires a resource to work on the Bruce Special Protection System (BSPS) Modification project and provide a new Smart Logic Monitor (SLM). The current SLM is a 1990’s vintage VME embedded processor based device and is to be replaced with a ruggedized PC and new software the temporary/contract person will write. This software development will be done in consultation with other members of the BSPS project.

The software developer would require expertise in the following areas to work on the SLM:
  • C/ C++ programming in a Windows environment using Visual Studio 2008.
  • RS232 serial communication programming using Windows API
  • Access database programming using ADO
  • Experience in creating software installation packages
  • Software design skills in real time applications
  • Man/Machine interface design skills
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to create design documentation and users manuals
The person will be responsible for:
  • reading and understanding the functional design description for the existing SLM
  • in consultation with the BSPS team, review the current SLM design to highlight requirements no longer needed (such as status change comparism and logging), to expand the connectivity table from 25 to 43, and determine any new requirements unique to the replacement SLM.
  • Revise the SLM functional design definition/description document
  • Create a project plan for the software development, testing and commissioning of two SLMs
  • Create the new SLM software
  • Work with the BSPS team to test the software at Cooksville BSPS lab
  • Develop training documentation for field staff on the operation and maintenance of the new SLM.
  • Provide complete documentation of the SLM such that revisions to the software can be made later by knowledgeable staff.
Location: The primary work location is Bay Street, Toronto Ontario with some travel to Cooksville (Mississauga)

Conditions:
  1. All contractors are expected to conform to Client’s code of conduct.
  2. All contractors will have to provide a security clearance
  3. All contractors will have to adhere to Client’s Workplace Safety program.
Duration and Terms:
Time required: 8 hours/day, 5 days/week.
Contract Duration up to 9 months with the potential to extend for up to 1, 3 month renewal option at Client’s sole discretion.
Estimated Start date: December 13, 2010 (to be confirmed at time of award).
